ONE BEDROOM APARTMENT DESIGN, KOTEI, KUMASI
…the design responds to the contemporary demand for residential spaces that provide privacy, comfort, security, and quality of life while remaining responsive to Ghana’s tropical climate.
The project explores the relationship between living spaces, natural light, ventilation, landscape, and transitional spaces. The building is therefore conceived as a compact residential environment where indoor and outdoor spaces work together to create a healthy and comfortable home.
The project is situated in Kotei, Kumasi, within a predominantly residential context.
The design responds to the residential character of the area while establishing a contemporary architectural identity appropriate for the client.
The design takes advantage of Kumasi’s tropical conditions by encouraging natural airflow.
Windows and openings are strategically positioned to facilitate cross ventilation, while balconies, verandas, and shaded outdoor spaces help create comfortable transitional environments.
Openings on opposite or adjacent sides of spaces can allow air to move through the building.
The strategy reduces dependence on mechanical cooling while improving indoor air quality and thermal comfort.
The material palette combines contemporary architectural materials with natural textures.
The façade components perform environmental functions by controlling sunlight, improving privacy, and encouraging ventilation.
Privacy is particularly important in the design of a private residence.
The building establishes a hierarchy between:
Public → Semi-Public → Semi-Private → Private
This is achieved through the positioning of entrances, circulation, windows, balconies, landscaping, and screening.
Security is supported through controlled access, appropriate lighting, clear visibility, and careful positioning of openings.
